This event will be held RAIN or SHINE. Bring your rain gear if you like!
Join the Penacook Historical Society and the Abbot-Downing Historical Society for Old Fashioned Family Fun Day!
Peek into the 1774 House and 1790s Rolfe Barn at fascinating layers of history. View the Abbot-Downing Historical Society wagons, sleighs and coaches stored in the barn. The vehicles will move to a new home in the Concord City Stables in a couple of years, so come see them in Penacook while you can. There’s even a rare mail-carrying sleigh coach in the little yellow garage.
Test your skills at old fashioned games like corn hole and jump rope (weather permitting). Win a penny for each game and bring it over to a re-imagined Dina and Rose O’Clair’s penny candy store for a treat.
Pick up a free ice cream and wander through the Community Garden. You may find some sweet raspberries, blackberries or blueberries to enjoy as a topping.
The 1834 House and Gift Shop will be open for self-guided tours, including the 1976 Bicentennial Quilt. Wear a historical costume if you’d like to dress the part.
You can even take home your very own piece of history: a real roof slate from the Merrimack Valley School District’s recent restoration of the Pioneer Engine House on Washington Street. We’ll have chalk on hand for writing and coloring on the slate.
And make sure to pose with our new photo op sign! Share your photos on social media with hashtag #PenacookHistoricalSociety and #AbbotDowningHistoricalSociety.
The event is free for everyone. Donations are welcome and appreciated. Bring water bottles – we’ll have a water refilling station on the porch of the 1834 House. Park on the street or in the field to the right of the barn. This is a fair-weather event. Check for updates at www.penacookhistoricalsociety.org/events.
Many thanks to Eleanor, Evangeline, and Beatrix Poirier and Patrick Maimone for posing for this great photo taken by board member Althea Barton.
